Every year, I do a little ritual where I research all the LGBTQ sci-fi and fantasy books coming out, and make a list of the ones I’m most excited for. Here are the queer SFF books coming out in 2022 that I can’t wait to read!
A Quick Dislaimer
Please note that this is not a full list of the queer SFF releases coming out in 2022. It’s not even a full list of the ones I want to read! If you want a much longer list, this community-built one on Goodreads will help.
The list I’m about to share contains just those books I’m personally most pumped for, and thus it is biased to my tastes. Most of these titles are f/f, though not all are. There is at least one m/m trans title, too.
With those disclaimers out of the way, let’s get to the books!
Queer Fantasy of 2022
Locklands by Robert Jackson Bennett (June 21)
The final book in The Founders Trilogy (starting with Foundryside), which is one of my all-time favorite fantasy series, is finally coming to a close, and oh God look at that cover! I’m scared!
Extasia by Claire Legrand (February 22)
A horror fantasy about covens, cults, religious trauma, and dark things in the woods. I look forward to reading this one during Spooky Season!
The Sunbearer Trials by Aiden Thomas (September 6)
I’m looking 👀 at the launch to Aiden Thomas’s new duology, pitched as Percy Jackson meets the Hunger Games, and if I recall correctly will be inspired by Aztec history and mythology! Sign me up!
The Final Strife by Saara El-Arifi (June 23)
F/F enemies-to-lovers fantasy set in a world inspired by Africa and Arabia.
Where Shadows Reign by Patrice Caldwell (Date TBA)
A vampire princess goes on a journey to the island of the dead to rescue her kidnapped best friend. This concept has me so intrigued!
Queer Sci-Fi of 2022
Hell Followed With Us by Andrew Joseph White (June 7)
I’ve been following Andrew on Twitter for a while and I’m so thrilled to finally read his first novel. It’ll be dark and queer and cathartic for those with religious trauma. I cannot express how anxious I am to read this!
Go Marching In by Tamsyn Muir (Date TBA)
The release date on this one keeps changing so I don’t know when it’s coming out but I need it. “Lesbian cyberpunk with a gunslinger in her 40s from the author of Gideon the Ninth” is just an instant sell for me.
Queer Mythology of 2022
The Helheim Princess by Tiana Warner (January 4)
F/F Norse mythology from the creator of the “Ice Massacre” comic, about a teenage stable hand teaming up with a valkyrie.
Spear by Nicola Griffith (April 19)
Arthurian retelling about a woman disguising herself as a man to gain her place at Arthur’s court. Adventure and lesbian romance. Yes, please!
A Song of Silver and Gold by Melissa Karibian (June 15)
A high-seas adventure about a princess disguising as a man to lead the hunt against sirens, and the siren warrior on a quest to kill her.
So Many Books, So Little Time
Sigh… What this blog post ultimately proves is that I will never, ever get caught up with my ever-growing, ever-towering TBR list, because as soon as I read anything, the authors of the world keep putting out more awesome stuff to take its place. Oh, the woes of being a bookworm!
